A Functional Medicine Approach to Mental Health

At Wise Roots Medicine in Bend, Oregon, my goal is to bridge the gap between physical and mental health. Drawing upon my experience as a naturopathic doctor and functional medicine practitioner to treat the body, and incorporating the highly effective Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy to address trauma and mental health issues, I can guide my patients to their place of healing faster.

Rediscover your sparkle

Rekindle your passion

As a naturopathic and functional medicine doctor, IFS practitioner, and woman/wife/mother in Bend, Oregon, I find deep fulfillment in being there for people when they feel their worst – and helping them feel their best.

Through our work together, I want to help you re-find your true self. Powerful. Passionate. Vibrant. Vital. Creative. Capable. Together, we can rediscover your sparkle and rekindle your energy and passion to fulfill your purpose in this world.

Mental health: Healing the invisible wound

Mental health conditions don’t just affect your mind - they have real, lasting, significant effects on your physical health.

But unlike a rash you can see, a fever you can measure, or blood pressure you can monitor, mental health is invisible. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t make it any less real. Or any less painful. Or any less important to treat.

It is possible to heal your mental health, just like a physical illness or chronic condition. At Wise Roots, I combine all of my personal experiences, professional knowledge, and physical and mental health treatment tools to help my patients find their true and lasting healing.

Caring for the women of my community

I believe everyone can benefit from Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy and from a holistic approach that treats both physical and mental health. While I welcome patients of all ages and walks of life, my true passion is building up the women in my community.

I find fulfillment in combining my knowledge of naturopathic and functional medicine and IFS therapy to help:

  • “Exhausted mommies”

  • New mommies struggling with postpartum depression

  • Busy professionals who need to find work/life balance

  • Women facing life transitions, such as divorce, empty nest, death of a loved one, job change/loss, retirement, relocation/move

  • Women battling weight challenges or eating disorders

  • Women going through menopause/perimenopause

  • Women ready to process their trauma

  • Women living with depression, anxiety and/or ADHD

Bridging the gap between physical and mental health

As a naturopathic doctor, I have spent my career helping people with their physical health. But the more patients I worked with, and the more I learned in my own personal journey, the more I understood that our physical and mental health go hand in hand. One cannot be healthy without the other.

And if our physical and mental health are interwoven, rather than addressing them in the traditional silos of “doctor” and “therapist, we must treat them in tandem. This is the collaborative work we will do together at Wise Roots Medicine.

Digging for the root cause

To find true and lasting healing, we must go beyond covering up symptoms. At Wise Roots Medicine, we’ll use a “detective mindset” together to investigate the root cause of your symptoms.

Instead of simply using natural medicine to address symptoms, we’ll dig deeper to find and treat the root cause. We won’t just cover up physical symptoms, like headaches, or mental symptoms, like anxiety. We’ll ask and answer questions like: Why are experiencing these symptoms? What is your body trying to tell you? Where is the dysfunction? Where is your body stressed to a point where it's needing to send you signals of pain and discomfort and disease?

This root cause approach is commonly used by naturopathic doctors and in functional medicine to treat physical ailments. At Wise Roots, I expand the highly effective approach to address mental health as well.

Healing with a holistic combination of tools

At Wise Roots Medicine, I guide my patients to their place of true and lasting healing using a holistic combination of physical and mental health tools. While each patient – and each treatment approach – is unique, some of the tools in my bag include:

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy

  • Gut health testing and treatment

  • Hormone balancing

  • Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)

  • Nutrition counseling

  • Lifestyle medicine

  • Guidance on living in harmony with nature and the body’s natural rhythms

  • Healthy weight management counseling

  • Food allergy/food intolerance testing

  • Natural supplements

  • Prescription medications, including controlled substances when appropriate

Introducing IFS

At Wise Roots Medicine, I use a therapeutic approach called Internal Family Systems, or IFS. IFS is a root-cause style of mental-emotional work that addresses both physical and mental health issues. I discovered IFS on my own personal mental health journey, and found real healing so much faster compared to the other styles of therapy I have tried over the years.

IFS is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy shown to be effective for treating a variety of mental and physical conditions and symptoms. In my practice, I have found success using IFS to address issues such as:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Phobias

  • Panic

  • Insomnia

  • Weight management, body image and relationship with food

  • Self-destructive habits

  • Interpersonal relationships

  • Anger issues

  • PTSD

  • ADHD

  • Healing emotional wounds and trauma

  • Physical health conditions, such as various chronic diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune conditions, as well as improving overall health and well-being

A little about me

Life has taken me from my birthplace in St. Petersburg, Russia, to the United States, where I spent a significant amount of time on the East Coast and West Coast alike, before settling in Oregon. Bend is the beautiful place I now call home with my husband and two children.

The first seeds of my passion for natural health care were planted by my mother, a physiatrist and natural medicine practitioner. To this day, I continue to draw on the knowledge she shared with me in my early years.

After moving on from my childhood dream of being a professional singer, I received my Bachelor of Science from Portland State University and my Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. I’m licensed by the Oregon Board of Naturopathic Medicine, registered as a dispensing physician with the Oregon Medical Board, and have completed IFS Level 1 training.

Since 2011, I’ve worked as a board-certified naturopathic doctor both as a solo practitioner and for various clinics in Oregon, California and Pennsylvania. I opened Wise Roots Medicine in 2022.

When I’m not working with patients, I enjoy reading, hiking, camping, Argentine tango, salsa, skiing and painting.
